Oppenheimer

Synopsis

In 2023, Christopher Nolan directed Oppenheimer, which focuses on the life and legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist and considered the “father of the atomic bomb.” The film was inspired by the biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” written by Martin Sherwin and Kai Bird, which also won the Pulitzer Prize. Oppenheimer’s life and his intricate work on the atomic bomb during world war two are examined alongside the myriad of moral, political, and existential questions his work brought forth.

The film opens by iterating Oppenheimer’s enchanting love for physical sciences alongside poetry and politics, weaving his early life. The University of California, Berkeley, and his European academic pursuits are highlighted. The year 1942 marks a shift in focus in the film, where we witness the United States government at work on the top secret Manhattan project, intensely competing to build the first atomic bomb to outpace Nazi Germany.

Oppenheimer J. Robert was brought on board the Manhattan Project as the final head scientist thanks to General Leslie Groves and his faith on Oppenheimer. His skepticism stemming from Oppenheimer’s left-leaning political views and relations with the Communist Party did not matter as the world’s greatest physicists were mobilized to aid Oppenheimer with the advancement of the world’s first nuclear bomb. It’s unfathomable to think the level of pressure that was mounting on Oppenheimer at the time It was further compounded by the fact that he was being considered the face of the country and world’s major scientific endeavors.

The bomb was tested and everything went according to the previously set Plans. The movie in itself does have an artistic interpretation of the bomb being tested and Oppenheimer quote death words in such an artistic fashion. The movie captured the suspense of the test with such attention to detail. The heart of the movie portrayed by the various elements of suspense and visual reinforces paired with Oppenheimer’s iconic quote. The quote itself was the bomb was detonated and he uttered the words from the bhagvad gita ‘Now I am death the world’s destroyer’.

The film even emphasizes the change in Oppenheimer’s and the country’s perception post the test’s results. The first part of the movie shows Oppenheimer as supporting the release of each bomb possible. This was under the face of his moral and political obligations in a very control void. When the country won the war he became a supporter of the limitation of arms and an opposed developer of more powerful bombs. His growing questions about peace did not go well with the government that was eager to watch everything, hugging the world.

Oppenheimer’s Security Clearance Hearings are evaluated in the film as a politically charged tribunal which was led by the greatly influential Lewis Strauss of the Atomic Energy Commission. Considered a security risk and a communist sympathizer, Oppenheimer undergoes character assassination. The color of his earlier achievements is vibrant, which starkly contrasts the colorless black and white of the hearings.

In the end, the film interprets Oppenheimer as a grim character A person of unmatched intelligence who helped shape one of the most crucial moments in humanity’s timeline, yet spent the remaining of his life deeply troubled by the repercussions of his deeds.
