The supernatural thriller Final Destination 5, directed by Steven Quale, is dated 2011 and is the fifth part in the Final Destination Franchise. This franchise gained its popularity due to the twists in the storyline and the emotional territory the stories backpack. Unlike the previous stories which focused on the distinctiveness and consequences of emotions, the emotional and merger narrative premises in the tale makes this part of the franchise distinct.
The Premise of the Franchise
The Final Destination series is unique in the way it rests its foundation on the theory of a haunting premonition, in which people survive a disaster and are later survived, only to fearfully be a part of a chain of a deadly encounter. Then, a preposterous and formless entity steps in to correct the “fate” and thus, follows an incredible series of bizarre “endings” to the ones who survive.
An abstract hatred, death, is the unseen and unique antagonistic figure of the franchise adding to the fear with no motive or face to the entity.
I: Prepare a Plot Summary
Final Destination 5’s opening sequence takes place on a bus filled with employees en route to a company retreat. One passenger is Sam Lawton, a chef who has to decide between relocating to Paris for his dream job or remaining in a long-term relationship with Molly Harper. On the bus, as they are driving over a suspension bridge, Sam has a vivid vision of the bridge collapsing. In his vision, a large portion of the bus’s passengers, including his friends and coworkers, perish in horrible ways.
Admittedly, the vivid nature of the premonition is chilling. In light of the vision, Sam manages to persuade a number of individuals to exit the bus seconds before the fatal event takes place. Like in the previous installments of the franchise, a portion of the individuals whose lives are saved are captured under the illusion of being “saved.” But, they eventual “unearth” a painful reality: they actively dove into the predicament they are trying to escape from.
In the group, the members all die under different circumstances, all counted as ‘natural’. To their dismay, their only option left is to reach out and guide the defiant coroner, William Bludworth, who, unlike the rest, is willing to help them. William explains to the group how one can outwit ‘fate’. To them, ‘fate’ is death, life is ‘balanced’ and can be maintained only with ‘outre’ life ethics’.
All the characters except William try to make sense of their existence and to avoid death, which, is the only way forward. They are left with heavy losses, manifested in ominous, uninvited questions doming from their wayward conscience. They are destined to face these. Paradoxically, the harder they try to defend themselves, the more they prove their guilt. Crafty and Sudden is the ‘balance’ between their self and the original movie, as the rest of the series is neatly tied up from drifted ends.
Direction and Cinematography
Steven Quale makes his directorial debut with this film, and it’s clear he’s polished and focused, sharp in vision. These aspects of the film are from Quale’s backgrounds in visual effects and the time he spent with filmmaker James Cameron on Avatar and Titanic, which is evident in the film’s striking imagery and well-executed sequences.
The bridge scene that opens the film is considered by many the most striking moment of the franchise. The pacing, the build up, and the editing all create the most thrilling and cinematic parts of the film. While the movie is filled with suspense, it manages to include some moments of emotional introspection and character development, moving beyond glassy thrills.
The cast of Final Destination 5 is made up of both up and coming and veteran artists. The role of Sam Lawton is essayed by Nicholas D’Agosto and he brings sincerity and grounding to the character. Molly Harper is played by Emma Bell and she impresses with her strong and vulnerable performance. Supporting cast members Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, and David Koechner add vivid characters to the film.
Calm and cryptic as always, Tony Todd is back as the coroner, William Bludworth. The character interlinks the multiple films of the franchise and adds a touch of class and mystic to the film and Bludworth’s character.
Themes and Symbolism
In Delphine’s Final Destination 5, the themes are intertwined with the examination of fate and choice, as well as control and its phantom. The film poses a very thought-provoking inquiry — are life events random or a part of a grander scheme? The film also probes its characters as their responses to ways in which fear and the anticipation of death are managed and the extremities to which they are willing to go to in order to save themselves or another are examined.
Unlike most in the genre, Final Destination 5 does not fixate on outside peril. Rather, it investigates internal struggle, ethical concerns, as well as the psychological imprint of someone in dire circumstances. This sophisticated take on character development aids in transcending the film beyond mere tension.
Production and Visual Style
In terms of its production, Final Destination 5 is of a higher quality, especially in comparison to its counterparts within the series. The film’s use of 3D technology, which back then resulted in a great buzz, was not critical to the narrative but served to immerse the audience in the film’s most pivotal moments. The use of special effects complements the visual narrative of the film without going overboard.
Brian Tyler’s compositions add yet another layer to the mood of the film by providing an eerie score for it. And the film’s other widescreen images by Brian Pearson capture the essence of every location, illustrating both its beauty and its turmoil.
Critical Reception
Final Destination 5 has been the subject of primarily favorable reviews from both audiences and critics alike. According to some, the film has succeeded in revisiting the original and providing newer elements as well as an interesting narrative to the story. Its present IMDb score of 5.9 out of 10, for a film in a genre as polarizing as this, is rather commendable.
Watching the film, audiences appreciated the tone, the cast, and the story’s suspenseful nature. Especially the last twist, where the movie is finally revealed to be a prequel to the first one in the franchise, proved to be very popular among the fans, as it provided a satisfying dedication to the beginnings of the saga.
Conclusion
By shifting the focus to the characters and applying a layer of moral depth to the narrative, Final Destination 5 manages to add a persuasive and rewarding story to the franchise, which is often overshadowed by mere suspense. It is by far the most meticulously designed of the sequels.
Fans of supernatural thriller books and movies that explore the concept of destiny and the repercussions of a person’s actions would find Final Destination 5 to be a very captivating and unforgettable addition to the series. The movie’s contribution to the storyline solidifies its status as a standout piece in a genre celebrated for its creativity and captivating narrative.
