Prometheus

Prometheus is set in the same universe as Alien, the first film in the franchise directed by Ridley Scott, released in 2012. Scott is returning to the universe where he first directed the iconic 1979 film Alien. While Prometheus is not a direct prequel to Alien, it lays down the narrative foundation prompting the events of the Alien saga. In addition, the film dives into the creation of life, the limits of scientific inquiry, and humanity’s search for a purpose, giving viewers a glimpse into humanity’s dystopian future wrestling with existential ideas.

The film blurs the lines between science fiction and horror as it undertakes philosophical contemplation and visceral terror. While the film is stunning visually, it splits the audience into two opposing camps. One camp argues in favor of the film as it returns to the genre of thought provoking science fiction, drawing comparisons with the works of Stanley Kubrick. In contrast, the opposing camp believes the film’s script is incoherent and filled with questions that are never answered.

Plot Overview

In the deep-space film, Prometheus, an expedition team is set out to uncover mysteries tied to human existence in the late 21st century. The archaeologist team Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway, portrayed by Noomi Rapace and Logan Marshall-Green, respectively, found a set of ancient star maps in different civilizations, suggesting the presence of advanced civilizations in existence. Using these findings as a pretext to gain advanced technological benefactors with Weyland Corp led by Peter Weyland, the group sets to go on a space expedition.

Onboard the spaceship, the team consists of the mission director, a captain for the spaceship, and a specialized assistant, an android called David, who is to help them out with anything they need. The spaceship is set to reach moon LV-223 where Elizabeth and the archaeologist team believe the advanced civilizations lie. The team plans to capture and reverse engineer them later, which they seem to call “Engineers”. Other members on board include Janek played by Idris Elba and David played by Michaels Fassbender.

A powerful bioweapon, an ancient black mutagen, turns organic life into a horrifying mutational sludge, and the Engineers are hard at work on the bioweapon project… Therefore, a massive structure filled with technology and murals was a technological bioweapon wonderland ripe for exploration. As for the rest of the crew, an unexplored mutagen was screaming loose chaos for them.

As for Shaw, the chaos of the crew blending with the base’s security systems continuously failing, along with losing members of the crew… She loses the quest for truth and must come to terms with deep heart-wrenching loss and twisted revelations about humanity’s origins. Bit by bit, Shaw pieces together the Engineers’ plan that was countered by the bioweapon turning rogue—their secret plan to exterminate humanity.

While the chaos ensues, Shaw finds herself the last human standing. Together with David, a disembodied android, Shaw sets out to learn the truth about the dubious Engineers and their heartless humanity destruction plan. So, out into the stars for their home world filled with interrogation and untangled circuits of humanity’s creation.

Exploring Thematic Elements and Philosophy

One of the most fascinating elements of Prometheus is the way it tackles deeply existential and metaphysical issues. The movie seeks to answer some of the most fundamental questions of human existence like where do we come from and why do we exist. The God-like figure of Shaw reveals a thought-provoking conflict of devotion and curiosity, science and belief, faith and reason.

Tall, pale, and god-like, the Engineers are described as the creators of man. Their indifference and hostility towards humans, however, raises deeper philosophical questions of the ethics of creation and the responsibilities of the creator. Prometheus captures the conflict of existence and creation without providing clear answers. Each viewer is left to ponder why anyone would create life, abandon it, and seek to destroy it. The questions are left unanswered, forcing us to consider the discomforting possibility that humanity is the offspring of a derelict experiment or some cosmic blunder.

The character of David, the synthetic android, adds another layer of thematic depth. He is a creation of man, yet superior in some aspects: intelligent, emotionless, and physically enhanced. David’s fascination with his creators is the same as humanity’s search for the Engineers. He represents the Frankenstein complex, a creation surpassing its creator and questioning existence itself. His motives remain enigmatic and sinister, particularly when he conducts experiments using mutagenic liquid on crew members without their consent.

Ultimately, Prometheus turns into a reflection on the risk of unbridled curiosity. The title itself is derived from the Greek myth of Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire from the gods and gifted it to humanity, only to suffer unending punishment. The film suggests that humanity’s pursuit of forbidden knowledge—of godlike power—comes at a steep price, mirroring the cautionary tales of myth, religion, and classic science fiction.

Characters and Performances

Noomi Rapace brings both strength and vulnerability to Elizabeth Shaw, who is a woman of science, and a person of faith who desperately hopes for the best amidst the harshest truths. Shaw is one of the few female science fiction characters to be both an emotionally and intellectually multi-dimensional.

Michael Fassbender stands out as David, giving the android a haunting precision, quiet menace, and sarcasm. He has one of the most memorable performances of androids in David’s character, combining elegance with chilling qualities.

Charlize Theron, in icy command, plays Meredith Vickers. Vickers epitomizes the Weyland Corporation’s chilling secrecy as a corporate suit, care more control than scientific discovery.

As Captain Janek, Idris Elba adds grounded charisma, and as the captain, he offers rational and sacrificial sanity amidst growing irrationality.

Guy Pearce, with heavy old age makeup, plays Peter Weyland, the aging CEO and founder of Weyland Corporation. Weyland is the person who have the most human hubris, trying to best death and seeking to meet his creation.

Direction and Visual Design

After decades, Scott is back to the Sci-Fi genre as he directs Prometheus. Ridley Scott is also the director of the movie, and the care he puts into his works is a sight to behold. Scott is remarkable for his grand alien landscapes alongside intricately designed interiors. He often merges these with ancient civilizations, scientific high technology, and Lovecraftian horror.

The film’s effects complement the world-building without overshadowing it. The Engineers’ structure designs, the star maps, as well as the alien ships are all beautifully terrifying. Some of the practical effects, especially the body horror, are visually intense in a way that stays true to Scott’s Alien roots.

The score from Marc Streitenfeld provides a sense of atmospheric greatness as well as a sense of heavy dread. He paired well with Dariusz Wolski, whose cinematography showcases the beauty as well as the isolation that comes with deep space.

Prometheus netted a mix of positive and negative reviews. Most of the criticism focused around illogical characters, too many unanswered questions, and a script that focused too heavily on mystery. Reviewers, however, seemed to enjoy the film’s awe-inspiring visuals and performances, especially from Fassbender. Their praise also extended to the film’s willingness to grapple with big ideas.

In the time between the movie’s release and now, its dedicated following has only grown, especially among fans of philosophical science fiction. The film stands as a sequel to Alien: Covenant (2017), and serves as a more direct bridge between Prometheus and the Alien franchise. Ultimately, however, Prometheus stands as a more enigmatic and cerebral work, driven by the questions it raises, rather than the answers it provides.

Conclusion

Prometheus is not Alien’s offspring as the filmmakers want us to believe. It strays even further away into the realms of ‘not-quite-existential’ reflection. It is a puzzler designed to put a wrench into thinking concerning our creators, how the universe is designed, and where exactly human beings lie within the given architectural schematic. Visually spectacular, Scott’s command of the camera complements the performances by the actors, creating a portrayal that is charged and emotionally captivating, making effectively stimulating as well as inflammatory viewing.

Prometheus can be regarded as a brilliant mistake or a flawed masterpiece. It is undeniably ambitious, like the characters, begging the question, of ‘what is the purpose of our existing the void that is the universe?’
